“-and then since you didn’t do that, once the incident had occurred, the next best thing you could have done was offer him first aid, and wait there for the ambulance to arrive and immediately explain truthfully what had happened instead of running away and trying to cover it up.”
I hung my head. Thank God I’d rung for that ambulance.
“But given that things have turned out how they have, I don’t think we’re going to be able to stop it at least going to the Youth Courts. But I am going to recommend a Youth Rehabilitation Order, with the main recommendation being the component that used to be called a Community Punishment Order.”
I waited nervously for him to explain what that actually meant.
“Thing is, Eve, you’ve already passed your exams and are gainfully employed so you’re not needing remedial educational help, you’re not needing drugs rehab, and I’m presuming that you haven’t been carrying a knife for self-protection and will from now on have it safely put away in your tool box at all times since it is completely illegal for an under-eighteen to be carrying any sort of knife on them,” he looked with stern meaning at me across the table, “and therefore the only part of this order which could be relevant to you is unpaid community service. It’s not like you’ve done over some Granny, so there’s no sense in which you can make reparations to the victim or community, so all that is left is basically volunteer work. The usual recommendation is between forty and two hundred and forty hours. At your age, kids can normally be expected to put in a lot of time in the school holidays but since you are already working full time, I don’t see how you can fit in more than a few hours a week. You will be supervised by the Youth Offending Team and you’ll be provided with a supervising officer from their department with whom you will have to attend meetings and set targets. And unfortunately this will be considered a criminal record that you will have to declare to future employers for some time. Given the government agenda at the moment, Eve, I can’t really get you off with anything less. Nor am I even inclined to. Do you understand?”
I gave a very small nod.
“Ok,” John said definitely, “Your first meeting with the Supervisor will be next Saturday.” He looked at Dad. “Best I could do, Jack.”
“Best you can do for us is get these pychos locked up. And make sure they don’t get bail between arrest and court neither. And you make sure you immediately let us know if they’re on the loose. Because I’m not promising nothing about what I’ll do if they come after my lass again.” He stabbed a big finger in the air for emphasis.
John’s lips were compressed but he said nothing. He realised, I think, that Dad had to be allowed to let off steam. “You might as well go home now, Eve,” he said.
